Per § 36-7.2 of the Code of Virginia (Notice of intent to demolish, liquidate, or otherwise dispose of housing projects), a Public Housing Authority must notify the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), and each tenant residing in the public housing project of its intent to demolish, liquidate, or otherwise dispose of a public housing project. This notification must occur six months prior to submitting an application to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In addition to submitting this notice, The Public housing Authority shall not require any tenant currently renting to surrender possession of his or her unit until at least 12 months after serving the notice on the tenant unless surrendering possession is otherwise allowed for by law.

DHCD has no oversight authority over Virginia’s Public Housing Authorities. The posting of a notice on this website does not mean that the Public Housing Authority has met all of its statutory requirements. Please contact your Public Housing Authority, HUD, or an attorney if you have concerns about the sufficiency of the notice.
