Region Three includes the counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Henry, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Patrick, Pittsylvania, and Prince Edward; and the cities of Danville and Martinsville.


REGIONAL COUNCIL

The Regional Council is a certified entity by the State Board that will propose projects and ensure accountability for the use of funds used to support projects endorsed by the Council. The intent of the regional structure is to provide an incentive for regions to collaborate in order to diversify the economy and create high paying jobs in the region.    

Regional Councils are business led and include individuals from a variety of sectors; education, government, civic or community leaders, economic and workforce development professionals, local government officials, regional planning entities and nonprofits.  

The Region Three Council is currently led by Chair Charles Majors and Vice Chair Ernest “Randy” Lail and includes the following 17 council members: Adam Birkett, W. Scott Burnette, Timothy Clark, Barbara Johnson, James McClain, Ronald Roark, Alfred Roberts, Larry Ryder, Roger Scott, Karl Stauber, Sherry Swinson, Denise Taylor-Forrest, C.R. “Bob” Timmons, Telly Tucker, Lauren Willis, Dennis Witt, and Nicole Young.

SUPPORT ORGANIZATION

A regional council must be affiliated with or supported by a new or existing organization whose purposes and competencies include collaborative planning, economic development or workforce activities within the region. Region Three is supported by Southside Planning District Commission, led by Gail Moody. The purpose of the support organization is to provide fiduciary oversight and administrative services for the activities funded by monies received from Virginia Growth and Opportunity Fund (VGOF). The support organization operates with the advice and consent of the regional council.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO-TEC) - $648,000

This project will expand existing curriculum offered by six higher education partners, to building a regional training system of scale for careers in IT and focused areas of advanced manufacturing. The overall goal of the project is to build a pipeline of talent beginning with middle school students, in order to increase the number of students entering the five regional training areas of need: precision machining, welding, IT/cybersecurity, robotics/mechatronics/automation, and advanced materials.
