Region One includes the counties of Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Grayson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe; and the cities of Bristol, Galax, and Norton.


REGIONAL COUNCIL

The Regional Council is a certified entity by the State Board that will propose projects and ensure accountability for the use of funds used to support projects endorsed by the Council. The intent of the regional structure is to provide an incentive for regions to collaborate in order to diversify the economy and create high paying jobs in the region.    

Regional Councils are business led and include individuals from a variety of sectors; education, government, civic or community leaders, economic and workforce development professionals, local government officials, regional planning entities and nonprofits.

The Region One Council is currently led by Chair Mike Quillen and Vice Chair Lois Clarke, and includes the following 20 council members: Moir Beamer, Kyra Bishop, Sam Cassell, George Cridlin, Richard Edwards, Mark Eschle, Allan Funk, Donna Henry, David Leonard, Josh Lewis, Ron McCall, Duane Miller, David Olive, Keith Perrigan, Beth Rhineheart, Dean Sprinkle, Cathy St. Clair, Travis Staton, Mike Stollings, and Joe Gary Street.

SUPPORT ORGANIZATION

A regional council must be affiliated with or supported by a new or existing organization whose purposes and competencies include collaborative planning, economic development or workforce activities within the region. Region One is supported by the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, led by Shannon Blevins. The purpose of the support organization is to provide fiduciary oversight and administrative services for the activities funded by monies received from Virginia Growth and Opportunity Fund (VGOF). The support organization operates with the advice and consent of the regional council.    


Current Projects

United Way of Southwest Virginia: Ignite Internships - $250,000

The project will expand the Ignite Program throughout the region and will collaboratively align school curriculums with local employer needs. United Way of Southwest Virginia will build a web‐based platform to deliver activities that will encourage post‐secondary education and streamlined workforce credentialing, provide work‐based learning opportunities and match new graduates with local employers.

Southwest Virginia Technology Council Hublink - $27,547.19 – Region 1

This capacity building grant will complete initial work on the SWVTC HubLink platform, an online jobs platform, where job-seekers will be able to access job and training opportunities in the technology industry. Prior to the build-out of the platform, SWVTC will solicit input from regional stakeholders, including workforce training providers, community colleges, private industry partners, student and job-seekers, etc. in order to determine the most valuable features for the online platform. ,/p>
